What Is Hernia Repair?

Looking for information on hernia repair? A hernia is a protrusion or bulge of an organ or body tissue through the tissue walls that normally contain it. Serious complications can occur and sometimes surgery is required to repair the hernia. This procedure is known as hernia repair and is performed by a physician in a hospital or clinic.

Hernia symptoms

While hernias are more commonly found in men, there are a few key symptoms of a hernia everyone should be aware of. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your groin or abdomen, check your body for the following symptoms: A visible swelling of the groin or in the skin of the abdomen. This may disappear if you lie down but will remain tender.

Constipation or blood in the stool, as well as a heavy feeling in the abdomen area. When bending over or lifting items, you feel discomfort in the abdomen or groin areas. These are the common symptoms of most types of hernias that people typically experience.

Types of hernias

A list of the most common types of hernias includes femoral, umbilical, inguinal and hiatal hernias. There are also some less frequent types of hernias such as obturator, Spigelian, incisional and epigastric hernias (which occur in infants). Hernias can be very painful and most of the time will require medical help to treat. Eventual recovery is probable but there may be recovery time where activities such as work or school may be restricted.

Each hernia is different but many of the symptoms are the same. If you have experienced any of the symptoms listed here, you should consult a physician immediately as many times a hernia will go away on its own but some require medical treatment and can in some cases be life-threatening if not treated. Understanding the different types of hernias is something your doctor can more easily help you do if you are diagnosed with a hernia.

Facts about hernia repair

In cases of medical necessity, sometimes intense pain will lead to the need for immediate surgery. When hernia repair is performed, anesthesia and sterilization of the affected area are done first and then an incision is made to separate the tissue and put it back in order, followed by a suture combined with plastic mesh to cover the wound.

In some cases, a repair does not require surgery and is performed using a suture alone. In these cases, the edges of the problem area are sewn together to eventually heal and position the tissue back in the place where it should be. Care should be taken when recovering from hernia repair that undue stress is not made on the body to aggravate a hernia, as this may cause the suture to come undone and even another hernia to develop as a result.
