What Does a Laparoscopic Surgeon Do?

Looking for a laparoscopic surgeon? It may be possible that you need a laparoscopy performed if you are experiencing undiagnosed pain in your upper or lower stomach area. A laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that is used to look inside someone in order to examine their organs. This visual inspection allows for a proper diagnosis, and because it is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, it comes with fewer risks when compared to invasive surgical procedures.

A patient will often be referred to a laparoscopic surgeon when other diagnosing methods have been tried and nothing has been found, e.g., ultrasound, CT scan or MRI scan.

What does a laparoscopic surgeon do?

A laparoscopic surgeon is able to perform a laparoscopy on a patient with the goal of providing a diagnosis for their mid-section pain. The procedure uses a special instrument called a laparoscope, which allows the surgeon to look inside the patient via a few carefully selected small incision areas. The laparoscope is a long, thin surgical instrument that is strategically inserted through each incision, allowing the surgeon to see inside the patient on a monitor via the light and camera located at the other end.

During the procedure, the surgeon will be able to fully explore the appendix, gallbladder, liver, pancreas, small intestine, large intestine, spleen, stomach, pelvic area and reproductive organs. They will specifically look for any signs of a tumor, liver disease and any fluid that many be built up inside the stomach.

What are the risks?

Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks that come with having a laparoscopy performed. However, the risks are minimal due to the fact that it is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The most common risk that comes with laparoscopic surgery is heavy bleeding or getting an infection. According to John Hopkins Medicine, there may be other risks involved depending on someone’s particular medical condition, making it necessary for them to let their health care provider know about all of their health issues.
