Incarcerated Hernia

An Incarcerated Hernia is one in which the structure which herniates through the opening gets trapped within the opening, and cannot be replaced back into the abdomen. The structure can be fat, or a loop of intestine. In either case, an incarcerated hernia is an emergency, and must be seen immediately. If a Surgeon is not available immediately, the patient must go to the nearest Emergency Room to be examined.
